Our aim is to improve health and well-being, both physically and mentally, through walking football. We feel passionately about it.
We know there is huge interest now in women's football, particularly following the success of the Lionesses, coupled with the fact that we are getting requests from women in Coventry and the surrounding areas asking if we have a woman's section. We didn’t, so now it’s time to change that, so we are going to create one. There are several clubs where girls and younger women can go and play regular football, but nothing in this area for the more mature women of 35+ to go and play the slower paced game of walking football if they feel regular football is not an option. Walking football is one of the fastest growing sports for men and women in the country and we want to be the first in this area to give women the opportunity to play locally without travelling miles to find a club. We have the organisation, we have the equipment, we have the will and the know how, we just need the players!
Steph said: “I used to play football when I was younger, but growing up I had knee injuries that prevented me from playing a fast-paced game. Since the recent success of the Lionesses, it’s inspired me to try walking football. It’s great exercise and a real boost for confidence. I look forward to joining Coventry & District walking football club.”
Becky said: “I joined walking football mostly to get active and fit, but got so much more out of it. It’s great for not only physical fitness but mental health too, by socialising with different people and feeling part of a community with similar interests. Now that Coventry & District are looking to start a women’s section, I’m looking forward to joining them.”
We therefore invite women of 35+ of all abilities who would love to give the slower paced version of the game a try, to come along and play walking football at the Alan Higgs Centre on Wednesday 28th August starting at 6pm, for a free of charge taster session and then we take it from there. We will be using an indoor pitch - so no worries about the weather! This is an opportunity to join like-minded women to play walking football in a well organised and established club with excellent facilities and a great social side to the club.
It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played football for a while or not played before. Walking football appeals to all age groups and all abilities. Don’t be worried about how you will get on or lack the confidence to give it a go. Don’t let that be a barrier, these feelings will drift away as soon as you start playing. The key to what we do at Coventry & District WFC is respect for every player no matter what their ability. We PLAY FOR FUN and enjoyment.
Come along and see for yourself and give it a go, you’ll be hooked! It would be helpful if you can turn up at the Alan Higgs Centre by the indoor pitch at around 5.45pm ready to start at 6pm.
This initiative is helped by the National Lottery Community Fund, supporting our aim that "Age Is No Barrier To Health & Well Being".
