Our first session

Our first Women’s Walking Football session for women in the age group 35+ was held on Wednesday 28th August 2024 at the Alan Higgs Centre, Allard Way, Coventry on the indoor pitch. Eight enthusiastic women turned up on the evening and were greeted by Alwyn and fellow committee members plus a few interested spectators. The ladies were thanked for coming along and warmly welcomed to the club. They were familiarised with the rules of the game before joining in a warm up routine. Four of the players had played walking football beforehand, four had not, so it was an easy case of selecting 2 teams with 2 experienced players on each side with 2 inexperienced players. We asked 2 male players to go in goal so as we could play 5 a side.
After a 20 minute game with a well earned rest in between, it resulted in a 3-2 victory to the blue team with two of the first time players scoring a goal for their respective teams much to their delight! Both male goalkeepers were kept on their toes in a close evenly contested match that was a pleasure to watch.
After the session, the smiles on the faces of the players showed that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and all promised to be back the following week to do it all again and maybe bring a friend!
We hope to build on the success of last week and increase the numbers as the weeks go by and judging by our inaugural session, the signs are good and we can be as successful with our women’s section as we are with the men.
The club has funding from a Community Lottery Grant and would welcome women to come along to our next sessions that will take place at the Alan Higgs Centre on Wednesday 4th Sept and Wednesday 11th Sept at 6pm. We know there are women players who want to put their boots back on and play the slower paced version of the game and we know there are women who have never played before but would like to give it a try, so we are giving you the opportunity to come along to our free of charge sessions and play the game for fun, friendship and wellbeing.
