As part of Will Oelrich’s celebration of grassroots sports clubs withing the local area, Will recently came along to one of our Tuesday evening women only sessions to try out walking football and to interview players and club officials.
The programme was aired on Monday 29th October 2024 as part of BBC CWR Sport’s Wildcard series.
A full (1 hour) recording can be found by accessing
the BBC CWR site hereOr you can access a shortened (half hour) version, which has been created for our website that just focusses on the walking football aspects, and can be found
HereWill first interviewed Alwyn, our Club Secretary, who was the driving force for establishing the women’s section of our club. They have talked previously about walking football, but this time they also spoke about the women’s section that is now up and running. Phil, our club Treasurer shared his experiences too and his aspirations for the group with Will.
Will also interviewed a number of players - Becky, Claire, Beverley and Rachel - all shared their own stories and what the walking football sessions mean to them. Some great stories – listen to the video/audio
HereThey each expressed similar sentiments and here are just a few of them: “just turn up and have fun”, “makes you feel really good about yourself”, “getting fit, whilst enjoying yourself”, “made some new friends and we all get along”, “socialising that you wouldn’t get from being at home”, “camaraderie is amazing”, “anyone can give it a go”, “you don’t need to have kicked a ball before”, “different ages and different experiences”, “all work together to enjoy ourselves”, “we all thoroughly enjoy it and inspires us”, “good to be active”, “really good for my mental health”.
If you are reading this article and haven’t tried walking football yet, but want to give it a go, then please come along to one of our sessions – you can take part or just watch. You can also contact Alwyn Day who will give you more details and his contact details are shown on this website.
