Match Report Sunday 13th April 2025
Inkberrow Ladies 0 Coventry & District Ladies 9
Coventry Ladies travelled to Inkberrow in Worcestershire to face an Inkberrow side who had set up their Ladies section about the same time as us last October. It was only our second friendly match having won the first one against a well established Hartshill Ladies team.
The facilities at Inkberrow were excellent with them having a brand new 3G pitch laid in January and a great little club house.
Inkberrow were excellent hosts and we are grateful for their hospitality and friendliness. We took a squad of 9 players and a posse of supporters, mainly family and friends of the players and of course Bruce, who is a regular at our men’s games.
The game kicked off and from the start the ball was knocked to Rachael Douglas who from 15 yards out on the left, let fly with an unstoppable shot into the top corner, bulging the net before the keeper had moved. Coventry from the off, had found themselves one up in the first 12 seconds and piled forward against a shell shocked Inkberrow who were never to recover.
Becky Davies who was a constant thorn in the Inkberrow side all afternoon with her movement and dribbling skills completed her hat-trick and Luca added a further two goals for a buoyant Coventry side to go into the break 6-0 up.
Coventry’s goalkeeper and ex Villa Ladies player Amy Hopkins-Hayes had little to do and was well protected by the impressive back two of Angela Lloyd and Debbie Devitt who snuffed out the opposition whenever they threatened. The engine room of the side in midfield, Mandy Draper-Green, Becky Davies and Rachel Douglas were dictating affairs and it came as no surprise when Becky added to her tally with her fourth goal from the penalty spot just after the start of the second half. At this point Rachael and Debbie were substituted with Lesley Robertson and Sarah Long entering the fray and they continued the good work of the previous two. Mandy Draper-Green shot low into the net for her first goal and Coventry’s eighth and then netted again shortly after for her second bringing the score to 9-0.
Oddly, Coventry who had bossed the game were starting to become a little sloppy with 10 minutes to go which allowed a spirited Inkberrow team an attacking option that had been denied them up until then.
This brought the best out of Amy in the Coventry goal who pushed a strong effort around a post and got a hand to another to see it over the bar. Late on, Mandy who was superb all afternoon was given a rest and Rachael came back on to close the game out. This late surge though from Inkberrow was never going to be enough to worry the clean sheet that Coventry deserved.
This was a tremendous performance from the Coventry side, Becky grabbing 4 goals, Luca leading the line up front and scoring 2, Rachael working tirelessly in defence and attack and bagging a worldy in the opening seconds, Mandy proving to be a tower of strength in the middle and skipper Angela and Debbie at the back reliable and dependable. Lesley and Sarah slotted in seamlessly when they came on.
Well done ladies, great performance and thanks to Steph who is always a tremendous support to myself and the ladies.
