It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the death of our friend, player and committee member Fred Scholes after a short illness. Fred was one of the original small number of players who got together when we split from the Sky Blues in the Community walking football to form our own Club. When we changed our name from Bedworth & District WFC to Coventry & District, Fred was one of the first to offer his services to our newly formed committee to which he was duly elected. He was a regular member of our 63s league squad and was always keen to make himself available for friendly matches.
Fred was a quiet man who had a no nonsense and practical approach to problems that I believe was a legacy from his days in the military as a Grenadier Guard and later as a policeman. He was a very popular and well liked member of our club who was easy to talk to and get along with. My own stand out memory of Fred was last season when I was managing the 63s team, we were 2-0 up and Fred was on the bench. I was conscious of the fact that he was on the bench last time out and I hadn’t brought him on, so just after the second half started I asked him to get ready to go on. He asked me who I was taking off and I told him, he said that the player was better than him and was playing very well so not to worry about disrupting the team to accommodate himself. To me that moment totally encapsulated the man he was, unselfish, totally honest and a real team player and Club man. He was right, we won 5-0!
We only need look at the comments on our club Facebook page to see the esteem which our club members held him in, he is truly a loss to the club and will be greatly missed by all.
We send our heartfelt condolences and love to his wife Trudi and all his family at this sad time. Fred Scholes a true gentleman, RIP our friend.
In memory of Fred, our club has donated £100 to Mary Ann Evans Hospice a local charity in the Coventry area and £100 to Marie Curie.
